Super Coder Super Star... Why do developers get so jazzed about Celeb Developers?

Greetings Nerds,

Why do we get so emphatic about Celebrity Developers? They are a bunch of Nerds. Doesn't make sense does it. Well here's my take.

When I was in college I had a friend who was on the Basketball team. His name was Stevie Wise. He was a real cool dude. He wasn't that tall. But apparently he was something else on the court. I on the other hand could not have cared less about Bball. I agreed with George Carlin who once said something like, "Give both teams 100 pts and 10 minutes and now we have a game." I just thought it was boring.

One day I met up with Stevie at the gym and he asked me to play. I did a few right handed layups since that's the only hand I could dribble with. I threw the ball in to Stevie and he became a super hero. This guy was fast as lightning, dribbled from the left side of the court to the other. Time slowed down like i was in the Matrix. He dunked the ball like he was flying. I stood there at the top of the diamond, key or whatever they call it and when his feet hit the ground he was a different person. Hooooly Sh*&^t! I couldn't believe my eyes. This guy was amazing.

You don't have to like the subject, you just have to have tried to understand how amazing the celebrity really is. When I see a developer query the DB from the client in JS in just a few lines of code, that's mind blowing! My mind goes back to when I used to create Swing interfaces in Java. That was hell, then you had to write action listeners and a data service. It took forever. Now you see these developers mastering a brand new tech and then implementing a whole piece of software in a matter of 5 or 6 hours, Unbelievable!

So the reason we get so emphatic! It's because we truly see how awesome these developers, designers, ... artists are.

Dave

PS I've always wanted to have the a cool moniker such as, Dave "The impaler." Sadly when it comes to software it's more like Dave "The emphatic."

PPS. This goes for their ability levels. Lots of really awesome developers are not the coolest of people. We are astonished in their ability not the person. They can be "Pre-Madanas" (Yeah, I know I spelled that wrong.)

PPPS. Same reaction to Winton Marcelas. I played the trumpet in high school. After watching a few youtubes of his, I am convinced he is superhuman or a god.

Intro

Greetings Nerds!

I'm blogging to both document my development process and to share ideas and solutions with you. I would like to give credit to a ton of people. I don't know any of them personally but they are the folks who have been kind enough to share their ideas and solutions in blogs, videos, posts, etc. They are, Billy Hollis, Ward Bell, Brian Noyes, Miguel Castro, Julie Lerman, Jessy Liberty, Art Langer, Dan Wahline. Scott Allen, John Lindquist, Craig Shoemaker, Joe Eames, Jon Flanders, Howard Dierking, Scott Hanselman, Shawn Wildermuth, and many, many more.
